Jaffna

Jaffna is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka's Tamil north — a peninsula of Hindu kovils, palmyra palms, lagoon islands, and cuisine distinct from the rest of the island. Decades of conflict ended in 2009; reconstruction and reopening make it one of Sri Lanka's most compelling regions for curious travellers.

The city centres on Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, whose golden gopuram dominates the skyline during festival season. Beyond town, Casuarina Beach, Delft Island's wild ponies, and quiet islands reward slower exploration.

We build Jaffna into north-bound routes with realistic drive times from Anuradhapura or Trincomalee — the peninsula deserves two or three nights, not a rushed day trip from Colombo.

Delft Island — Neduntheevu — holds feral ponies descended from colonial stock, baobab trees, and coral-stone walls in a flat, windswept landscape unlike mainland Sri Lanka. Ferries depart from Kurikadduwan jetty with timetables that require morning flexibility.

Nagadeepa on Nainativu is a Buddhist pilgrimage site reached by separate boat — many combine both in long day trips. Seas can be rough; we monitor conditions and provide motion-sickness advice.

Jaffna crab curry — fiery, coconut-rich, and eaten with rice or string hoppers — is the peninsula's headline dish. Restaurants in Jaffna town range from simple lunch rooms to venues specialising in seafood fresh from lagoon and sea.

Palmyra toddy, jaggery, and odiyal flour appear in local sweets and gravies unfamiliar elsewhere. Vegetarian Tamil meals with multiple chutneys reward those avoiding seafood.
