Badulla

Badulla is Uva Province's capital — a hill-country town at the railway terminus end of the scenic line from Kandy, gateway to Ella thirty minutes south and Dunhinda Falls nearby. Less picturesque than Ella but functional for rail connections and provincial heritage.

Muthiyangana Temple anchors Buddhist tradition locally; Demodara loop and Nine Arch Bridge lie within day-trip range. Markets and bakeries serve passing travellers and residents.

We rarely recommend multi-night stays unless rail schedules force overnight — most clients pass through or use as jump-off for waterfalls and Ella.

The Demodara spiral allows trains to gain elevation by circling a hill and passing under the track they just crossed — unique colonial railway engineering minutes from Badulla.

Nearby Nine Arch Bridge lies toward Ella — same day covers both with early start.

Badulla connects Ella, Bandarawela, and Nuwara Eliya via winding roads — we use it to break long rail days or access Dunhinda without Ella hotel premiums.

Descending toward Monaragala and Yala starts eastward from Uva — routing saves backtracking when combining hills and safari.
