Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka's first great capital, flourishing for more than a millennium from the 4th century BC. Its archaeological zone spreads across a vast sacred landscape of stupas, monastery ruins, reservoirs, and living pilgrimage sites still central to Buddhist practice.

The Sri Maha Bodhi — grown from a sapling of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment — is the spiritual heart of the city. Pilgrims visit daily, and the atmosphere differs sharply from museum-like ruins elsewhere: this is an active religious centre.

Plan at least a full day, ideally two, to cover major sites without exhaustion. We arrange bicycles or a vehicle with a knowledgeable guide because distances between monuments are significant in the heat.

Jetavanaramaya was once among the tallest brick structures in the ancient world; its massive dome still dominates the horizon. Abhayagiri monastery complex included ponds, refectories, and the Samadhi Buddha — a fine meditation statue in seated pose.

These sites illustrate the scale of monastic Buddhism when Anuradhapura traded with Rome and China. Information boards and museum exhibits help, but on-site narration brings the ruins to life.

Bicycle hire is popular for independent exploration; we can provide maps and suggested loops or stay with a chauffeur-guided drive if you prefer shade between stops.

Anuradhapura's ancient tanks — man-made lakes — fed a sophisticated irrigation civilisation. Tissa Wewa and Nuwara Wewa on the city's edge remain in use, reflecting stupas on still water at dawn.

Country roads through paddy fields connect scattered ruins less visited than the main circuit — ideal for travellers with extra time or a second day. Waterbirds and village life accompany quiet rides.

We recommend hats, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Monsoon rains can make paths muddy; dry season from May to September suits cycling best.
