Gateway to Kumana & Arugam Bay
Ampara district spans rice plains, lagoons, and forest edges connecting the east coast surf village of Arugam Bay with Kumana National Park and Lahugala elephant country — more administrative hub than tourist destination, but essential for routing remote east safaris.
Lahugala Kitulana National Park offers compact elephant viewing near ancient tanks without Yala-scale crowds when herds visit water. Ampara town supplies services sparse elsewhere in the east.
We use Ampara logistically for Kumana and Arugam combinations rather than extended cultural touring — overnight stays are functional.
