What it is

Yala Leopard Safari — the full experience

Yala is Sri Lanka's most celebrated national park, best known for the highest density of leopards of any national park in the world. Safari jeeps enter at dawn and dusk, navigating a mosaic of scrub jungle, grassland, and seasonal lagoons where leopards, elephants, sloth bears, and crocodiles share the landscape.

The park's Block 1, though the most visited, consistently delivers the best leopard sightings, often with individuals resting on rocks in plain view of vehicles.

Shorta Tours arranges Yala Leopard Safari as part of a tailored private itinerary, providing expert guides, comfortable private transfers, and hand-picked operators to ensure a seamless and truly memorable experience.

History

When it began and why it matters

Yala was gazetted as a game sanctuary in 1900 under British colonial rule, becoming a national park in 1938. The Ruhuna kingdom thrived in this region from the 2nd century BCE, and the park contains several ancient ruins including Sithulpawwa Rock Temple.

Decades of conservation have allowed leopard populations to recover strongly, making Yala the most reliable location in the world for leopard sightings.

Today, Yala Leopard Safari remains one of the highlights of visiting southeast Sri Lanka, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.

Why famous

Why travellers seek it out

Yala holds the world record for leopard density, with an estimated one leopard per square kilometre in Block 1. The park is also home to large herds of wild elephant, sloth bears (rarely seen elsewhere in Sri Lanka), mugger crocodiles, and over 215 bird species.

The dry season from February to July draws wildlife to diminishing water sources, concentrating animals around lagoons and making sightings spectacular.

The ideal time to visit is February–July, when conditions are at their finest and wildlife or weather cooperates most reliably with the experience.
