What it is

Wilpattu National Park Safari — the full experience

Wilpattu National Park is Sri Lanka's oldest and largest national park, covering 1,317 km² of dense forest interspersed with a unique network of naturally occurring lakes (villus) — water-filled depressions that attract wildlife from kilometres around and create an entirely different safari aesthetic from Yala's open scrubland. Leopards are well established at Wilpattu and are sighted with increasing frequency as populations recover from the park's wartime closure, while sloth bears, elephants, deer, and water birds congregate at the villus with extraordinary photogenic results.

The park's remoteness and comparatively low visitor numbers mean encounters feel genuinely wild.

Shorta Tours arranges Wilpattu National Park Safari as part of a tailored private itinerary, providing expert guides, comfortable private transfers, and hand-picked operators to ensure a seamless and truly memorable experience.

Where

Where it is in Sri Lanka

Wilpattu lies 30 km north of Puttalam and 180 km north of Colombo, near the ancient capital of Anuradhapura. The park's relative remoteness from the main tourist circuit — the journey from Colombo takes 3–3.

5 hours — means it receives far fewer visitors than Yala despite similar biodiversity. Wilpattu pairs naturally with Anuradhapura's UNESCO sites, Kalpitiya dolphin watching, and the Mannar causeway on a northwest Sri Lanka itinerary.

Shorta Tours provides private transfers to Wilpattu National Park Safari from any base in Sri Lanka, coordinating timings to maximise enjoyment and minimise travel fatigue.

History

When it began and why it matters

Wilpattu was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1905 by the British colonial government, becoming a national park in 1938 — one of the first in Sri Lanka. It was closed to visitors between 1984 and 2003 due to civil conflict in the region, and this extended closure — though devastating for local communities — may have inadvertently aided the recovery of wildlife populations, particularly the leopard.

Since reopening, Wilpattu has seen substantial investment in safari infrastructure and wildlife monitoring, and it is now regarded as Sri Lanka's most exciting emerging safari destination.

Today, Wilpattu National Park Safari remains one of the highlights of visiting northwest Sri Lanka, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.

Why famous

Why travellers seek it out

Wilpattu is famous for its wild character and its villus — an ecosystem type unique to this park, where circular water-filled pans in the forest create concentrated wildlife gathering points unlike any other park in Sri Lanka. The park's leopard population has grown significantly since reopening, and close encounters are increasingly common as the animals lose their wariness of safari jeeps.

The forest setting means sightings involve a more active search than at Yala, rewarding patient observers with a deeper sense of jungle discovery.

The ideal time to visit is February–October, when conditions are at their finest and wildlife or weather cooperates most reliably with the experience.
