What it is

Madu River Boat Safari — the full experience

The Madu River Boat Safari glides guests through a labyrinthine network of mangrove channels and tidal inlets on the Madu Ganga, a Ramsar-designated wetland and one of the most biodiverse estuarine ecosystems in Sri Lanka. Wooden flat-bottomed boats navigate between 64 small islands overhung with giant mangrove roots and towering pandanus palms, passing cinnamon islands where bark is still processed using centuries-old methods, fish therapy pools where tiny Garra rufa fish perform their famous pedicure, and Buddhist temples built on reed-fringed islets.

The river is alive with kingfishers, purple herons, monitor lizards, and small crocodiles sunning on the banks.

Shorta Tours arranges Madu River Boat Safari as part of a tailored private itinerary, providing expert guides, comfortable private transfers, and hand-picked operators to ensure a seamless and truly memorable experience.

History

When it began and why it matters

The Madu Ganga (Madu River) has been fished and inhabited by communities for over 2,000 years, and its islands contain evidence of ancient Buddhist and Hindu settlements going back to the Anuradhapura period. The wetland was included in the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 2003, recognising its international importance as a habitat for waterbirds, endemic fish species, and a network of interdependent mangrove communities.

The river became a recreational boat safari destination in the 1990s as Bentota and Beruwala developed into popular beach resort areas.

Today, Madu River Boat Safari remains one of the highlights of visiting southwest coast, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.

Why famous

Why travellers seek it out

Madu River is famous as one of the most rewarding short nature experiences on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, offering extraordinary proximity to mangrove wildlife, island life, and traditional cinnamon cultivation within a single 2-hour circuit. The cinnamon peeling demonstration — in which a local farmer strips, curls, and grades sticks of true Ceylon cinnamon — is a unique sensory encounter that connects the ancient spice trade to living tradition.

Monitor lizards (up to 2 metres long) and water monitor lizards are regularly sighted sunning on fallen logs.

The ideal time to visit is year-round, when conditions are at their finest and wildlife or weather cooperates most reliably with the experience.
