Kuragala Ancient Temple

Kuragala's cave complex was established as a Buddhist hermitage during the Anuradhapura period (3rd century BCE to 10th century CE), part of a tradition of forest monks (araññavāsī) who built meditation cells at remote and dramatically situated rock outcrops throughout Sri Lanka. Sufi holy men from South Arabia and India adopted the caves for ziyāra (devotional visits) some time in the medieval period, leaving Arabic inscriptions alongside the older Brahmi script Buddhist carvings.
