Anuradhapura Sacred Heritage Tour — the full experience

Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka's first great capital, home to one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and containing some of the most sacred Buddhist sites on Earth. A full-day heritage tour covers the Sri Maha Bodhi — the world's oldest historically documented tree, a cutting of the original Bo tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment — the Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya dagobas, and the remarkable Thuparama (Sri Lanka's oldest dagoba, built in 3rd century BCE).

The sheer scale of Anuradhapura's sacred city, spreading over kilometres of ancient streets and gardens, rewards an unhurried day of exploration.

Shorta Tours arranges Anuradhapura Sacred Heritage Tour as part of a tailored private itinerary, providing expert guides, comfortable private transfers, and hand-picked operators to ensure a seamless and truly memorable experience.

History

When it began and why it matters

Anuradhapura was established as a capital in the 4th century BCE and flourished for over 1,400 years as one of the greatest cities in Asia, trading with ancient Rome, China, and India and supporting a population of hundreds of thousands. The city became one of the principal centres of Buddhist learning and pilgrimage in the ancient world after the introduction of Buddhism by Mahinda in 247 BCE.

Its decline began with repeated South Indian invasions in the 10th–11th centuries CE, and the capital eventually shifted to Polonnaruwa, after which Anuradhapura was slowly reclaimed by jungle until rediscovery in the 19th century.

Today, Anuradhapura Sacred Heritage Tour remains one of the highlights of visiting North Central Province, drawing guests from around the world who seek its unique combination of history, nature, and authentic Sri Lankan character.

Why famous

Why travellers seek it out

Anuradhapura is the holiest city in Sri Lanka and one of the most sacred in the Buddhist world, drawing millions of pilgrims annually to the Sri Maha Bodhi — a living sapling of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, now 2,300 years old. The Ruwanwelisaya dagoba, rebuilt and completed by King Dutugamunu in 140 BCE, is one of the wonders of the ancient world, with a circumference of 290 metres and a height of 55 metres.

The city's Sacred Precinct is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its quiet pools, ancient moonstone carvings, and flowering frangipani create an atmosphere of timeless sanctity.

The ideal time to visit is year-round, when conditions are at their finest and wildlife or weather cooperates most reliably with the experience.
